Nausea and Hot Flashes Can Be Signs of Something Else

What comes to mind when hearing about somebody having a heart attack?

Someone clutching their chest and then eventually falling over?

There are different symptoms of a heart attack, especially for women, not including direct chest pain.

When my mother had a heart attack, she complained of the need to use the bathroom as well as vomit. When the feeling didn't subside, she went to ER in a squad. It was at the hospital, they discovered that it was a heart attack and they transported her to the main campus where they were waiting for her and prepped for surgery.

Just recently, I was on a hospital observation floor for two days. I didn't feel good with the same symptoms as described above. My doctor and I had already been in close communications regarding my blood pressure and I had just sent her my numbers a couple of days before. But since I didn't feel right and it was getting worse, I took my blood pressure. It was extraordinarily higher than what I have ever had before...and it was rising. Feeling close to fainting, I called EMS. After extensive testing and 1 day of medication my numbers are normal. Hormonal, thank goodness.

Regular exercise and diet are key to improving numbers to healthy blood pressure, cholesterol (although there is recent controversy now questioning if bad cholesterol is really bad), triglycerides, and glucose levels. Unhealthy numbers can possibly and over time eventually lead to heart issues, kidney problems, stroke, amputation of digits and limbs, and other health concerns leading to fatality.

Regular visits to the doctor are strongly recommended. Exercise and diet do not provide a 100% guarantee to a medical episode-free life.

The following link is from BlackDoctor.org about a woman's recent experience on thinking it was just something else. She was really having a heart attack.

HIV Cases Increasing in Black Men

Late last year, BlackDoctor.org posted that HIV Cases are Increasing with Black Men.

An excerpt from the posted article:

"About 1,000 young people ages 13 to 24 are newly infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, each month, according to new data released for the first time.
About 60% of HIV-positive young people have no idea that they’re infected, according to a new CDC report."

Don't know what's worse?  The 60% of the young people that have no idea that they're infected or the 1,000 of young people ages 13 to 24 newly infected.

If It's In the Dictionary - Don't Use It

If a password contains words in a dictionary, it is possible to be hacked.

There are programs that run through password combinations by going through words in the dictionary faster than autodialers from telemarketers.

The best password has the following:

  • No more than three numerical characters and not in any sequential or repetitive appearance - such as 123, 345, 777...using four will help a user refrain from using last four digits of social security numbers, last four of phone numbers, addresses, zip codes, etc
  • Use a symbol character...or two - such as .  *  /  ?  !  _  -  whatever the program will allow to be used
  • Don't use any word that would appear in the dictionary.  Use words like frilmn or selkjeifo.  Just let the fingers run across the keyboard to make up a word.  To be sure that it doesn't appear in the dictionary - look it up.    jweioj gijkn
  • Use uppercase and lowercase characters - bgkmEpoijkc.852!
  • Try not to use names of people in the family.

Write down the password in a safe place.  It might would be best to keep the password away from the computer but placed somewhere where it can be found easily by the user in case of an emergency - out of sight from where nobody would think to look.

Count It Up With These Tools

Leasing or Buying a Car

Buy the car or lease the car.  This calculator takes the wonder out of what are the costs to purchase a car to own or have a new car to drive until getting a new one.

Renting vs. Buying a Home

In today’s economy, one can be a little leery about purchasing a home and think that renting is the way to go.  On the other hand, one could think that there is no better option than homeownership and that the benefits in doing so outweigh any benefit to paying a landlord.

Valentine’s Day Post - Love Self Enough to Use a Condom

Not only is it St. Valentine’s Day but it’s also National Condom Awareness Day.

In fact, according to the American Sexual Health Association (ASHA), the month of February is National Condom Month.

As already known, condoms are used for birth control (protection is increased with another form of birth control) and the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

Everything has its effective rate but the only thing that is 100% is abstinence.

If not in a committed, monogamous, marital (yep) relationship…

...Love self more before loving someone else.

And even then…

Happy St. Valentine’s Day.

Just Give Access To The Money?

-->
So I stopped at a make-up counter at a department store.  When I pulled out my debit card to pay for my purchase, the sales clerk began telling me about the great debit card program that the store offered.

With delight, the sales clerk informs me that the department store now had their own debit card and it was real simple to begin.  Just simply give the cashier a voided check and then when the debit card is used, the money will be deducted from my account just like using my own debit card.  The only thing is that I’ll be getting EXTRAORDINARY specials and discounts where in a short period of time some purchases will be pretty much free.

I told her it sounded nice, but I was not interested in letting a department store have authorized access to my checking account through another debit card operated by another bank.

We volleyed back and forth.

“It’s a program that’s like no other program.”

“It’s sounds like a nice program but I’m not giving authorization for unlimited access to my bank account.”

“They only go into your account when you use the debit card and you’ll get this and that and that and this.”

“I understand, but I’m not here often enough to take advantage of the program.”

“But even in one transaction, even today, you can get this, this, this, and that.”

“Thank you.  I’m not interested.”

“But everybody is doing it.”

Get behind me, Satan.  I almost went there.  Had to catch myself.  I moved the conversation to the direction of ‘hurry up and ring me out so I can get out of here and away from you’.

So she’s ringing, but she’s still talking. “I’m giving you a brochure so you can learn more about it.”  She looked at me in bewilderment and said, “Everybody is taking advantage of this.”

I don’t give a flying flip.  If I got to hand over my checking account information for someone else’s debit card, one more thing tied to my money and to manage in case it gets lost just to get a discount, then I don’t need to be in the store.  If the store can give those great discounts, then why not just do it on a keyring card like all of the other stores?   Why does it have to be tied to somebody’s bank account?  That just didn’t make sense to me as an eyes-wide-open-and-ain’t-studden-the-discount-hype consumer.  Those huge discounts and free future transactions weren’t erasing the fact that the store would be using the authorization and access to my account information for their gain in some kind of undisclosed way while opening up another window for a hacker or identity theft no matter what security promises they gave.

I took the brochure so I could remember to blog about it.

Civil Court Judgment Survival Tips

It can happen to anybody.  Loss of household income due to layoff, the passing of a loved one or a divorce from someone who happened to be an income earner, health issues in the family resulting in loss time from work and/or mounting medical bills.  All these things make conditions favorable for a perfect storm – a civil court judgment.

Avoid the Judgment If At All Possible

The first thing to do is avoid getting to the point where a party wants to take you to court.

At the first indication of getting behind, write a letter detailing what led to the current personal financial crisis.  Don’t write a sappy letter to pull the heart strings and try to get sympathy because basically they don’t care.  Just write a to-the-point summary of what has happened.

In the next paragraph, write what you plan to do about it.  If you can’t pay anything, then you can’t pay anything.  If you can send something as a good faith payment, then send it.  Keep them updated consistently on the situation and try to send something first opportunity.

Send any and all payments by money order only and do not obtain the money order from your banking institution.  Anyone with a judgment can subpoena information, but no sense in making it easy for them to know the location of personal bank accounts to issue a garnishment should a judgment takes place.

On a side note with that being said, if asked the place of employment or employer/company name, don’t disclose.  Any information obtained is used to collect a debt. They tell you that up front.   Again, a subpoena can be served to obtain this information and it may be asked during a court hearing - which in both cases, must be disclosed.

The sooner intention is shown to pay the debt even if not financially able at the present moment, the better the party owed the money will try to work with you.  Some companies could call everyday.  If a letter was sent or a conversation took place within 30 days, tell them:
  • to check their records on the last communications
  • tell them nothing has changed since then and if it does they will be notified immediately,
  • tell them the date which would be 30 days since the last communications on when you will give them an update.

Don’t let the harassing calls shake you up.  Plus, being upset will only push the brain to the back making a person prime to make an unaffordable arrangement out of persistent nagging – a technique that bill collectors have perfected.

Court Hearing Set for Judgment

Many years ago, a party filed a civil case.  To make a long story short, the money to cover the debt owed was coming, but wouldn’t be in time to avoid the judgment and I didn’t want to screw up my credit.  Since I had access to an attorney, he suggested that I could file an answer*.  He told me exactly what I would need to say and then I downloaded a court filing template.  Filled in the information and sent it to the court via US Mail – certified and return receipt.  This caused a series of events that postponed the hearing (this is best that I can recollect because this was when I was a youngster… but bottom line we never made it to court and I sent them the money and the case was dismissed).

The key in this is having access to an attorney and seeking legal counsel to properly advise.  Not playing attorney.

*An answer can also stimulate the filing of subpoenas from the other party for information including place of employment, all sources of income, and all banking information.

Gavel is Struck - Judgment is Granted

When judgment is granted, income and assets are open for garnishment.  Depending on the type of debt and amount, liens could be placed on property.

This is the time to make a payment arrangement that is satisfactory.  If the payment arrangement is not satisfactory to the other party, then the process begins for them to seek collection through garnishment.  It’s not hard for companies who have judgments, especially those who have attorneys on retainer (they filed for judgment didn’t they?), to find out place of employment and banking information.

Usually, the funds that are deposited into accounts not related to earned income, unemployment, child support, etc. are wide open for the taking.  So, if the income tax refund check is deposited or a Certificate of Deposit or savings account is opened, that money is subject to garnishment.  The garnishment from earned income is requested directly with the employer and the employer takes the money out of the check and then sends it to the company.

Sometimes a series of garnishments can collect more money than was owed.  Other than seeking legal counsel and chasing after everybody to get the money back that shouldn’t have been taken, this could be exhausting and sadly…..possibly fruitless.

In Summary:

  1. Don’t hide.  Be upfront about the situation.  Initiate the conversation and stay in control of the conversation – preferably in writing.  Keep copies.
  2. Try the very best to make a realistic payment arrangement for you and them.
  3. Only communicate information on a need to know basis.  Just because somebody merely asks a question, doesn’t mean you have to answer – especially without a court order for the information.
  4. Seek Legal Counsel.  All possible scenarios and all the ins and outs about judgments, court filings, and garnishments were not included in this blog post.  This was merely an overview.

If sick, there is the doctor.
If the teeth need attention, then there is the dentist.
If surgery is needed, it’s performed by a surgeon.

SEEK LEGAL COUNSEL FOR ANY AND ALL LEGAL SITUATIONS.
